Sports Medicine

The objective of our Sports Medicine practice is to:

  • Help with pain relief from sports-related injuries
  • Provide functional improvement or maintenance
  • Offer exercise programs and functional testing of areas such as strength, mobility, breathing capacity, and coordination

There are four aspects to sports medicine:

  • Preparation of the athlete
  • Prevention of illness or injury
  • Diagnosis and treatment of illness or injury
  • Rehabilitation and return to sports activity

Preparation (conditioning) uses diet, exercises, and monitoring of practice sessions to improve specific aspects of performance such as speed, strength, and endurance. Specific exercises are used in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Benefits include lower blood pressure, higher HDL cholesterol, improved disease resistance, and better general well-being.

Prevention identifies any predisposition to injury or illness. It also covers warm-up, stretching, and the design and use of protective equipment. Many surgical techniques developed in sports medicine, particularly for knee injuries, are now used for the general population.

Diagnosis and treatment of illness or injury is the process of determining the core issue of the illness or injury and formulating a plan of treatment.

Rehabilitation  prepares an injured or ill athlete to return to activity after initial treatment. We can refer you to a specialist for long-term rehabilitation therapies such as massage therapy, chiropractic, physical therapy, etc. that can help you with treating chronic disabilities.
